The markets (or mercados), often referred to as tanguis (tee-ang-ees), in Mexico are a tradition that extend as far back as before the arrival of the Spanish. These markets, which open one day a week, are where town residents would come to buy goods such as tobacco, textiles, chocolate, and precious metals. Today, these markets offer a wider range of goods and attract tourists from all over the world.
